YouTube chapters not showing: what to check?

Added your own timestamps? Start with the format checklist. Expecting YouTube to create chapters? Check the automatic chapter settings. These are separate checks, and a valid list or enabled setting does not guarantee chapters.

If you added your own timestamps

Open the saved description in YouTube Studio and compare your list with the checklist. For the full walkthrough and a real video example, read how to add chapters to a YouTube video.

Common timestamp errors and corrections

These are fictional format examples for a 3:00 tutorial, not chapters from a published video. The corrected lists follow the format rules; use boundaries that match your own content.

The list does not start at 00:00

✕ Incorrect

00:10 Introduction
00:45 Main idea
02:30 Summary

✓ Corrected

00:00 Introduction
00:45 Main idea
02:30 Summary

The opening ten seconds were missing. Add a chapter that starts at the beginning of the video.

There are only two chapters

✕ Incorrect

00:00 Introduction
02:30 Summary

✓ Corrected

00:00 Introduction
00:45 Main idea
02:30 Summary

Add a third meaningful topic boundary. Here the main idea starts at 00:45; do not invent a topic just to reach the minimum.

The timestamps are out of order

✕ Incorrect

00:00 Introduction
02:30 Summary
00:45 Main idea

✓ Corrected

00:00 Introduction
00:45 Main idea
02:30 Summary

The last line jumps backwards. Reorder the lines so viewers move forward through the video.

One chapter is only five seconds long

✕ Incorrect

00:00 Introduction
00:05 Overview
00:45 Main idea
02:30 Summary

✓ Corrected

00:00 Introduction and overview
00:45 Main idea
02:30 Summary

The gap from 00:00 to 00:05 is too short. Merge the opening sections and update the title to describe both.

The final chapter is too short

✕ Incorrect

00:00 Introduction
00:45 Main idea
02:30 Summary
02:55 Goodbye

✓ Corrected

00:00 Introduction
00:45 Main idea
02:30 Summary and goodbye

For a 3:00 video, 02:55 leaves only five seconds. Merge the goodbye into the summary; the final chapter now lasts 30 seconds.

Check access to chapters and Advanced features

YouTube directs creators without chapter access to apply for Advanced features. In Studio, open Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility → Advanced features and follow the steps shown for your channel.

Use YouTube’s feature access instructions if access is unavailable or restricted. Editing timestamps does not restore channel eligibility.

If you expected automatic YouTube chapters

In Studio, open Content → your video → Show more → Automatic Chapters, enable Allow automatic chapters and save. A manual chapter list takes precedence over automatic chapters.

YouTube does not generate automatic chapters for every eligible video. Its automatic chapter help also lists active channel strikes and content that may be inappropriate for some viewers as restrictions. Check these when troubleshooting automatic chapters; they are listed in that section of the help page.

If automatic chapters are unavailable, you can prepare your own list and check the format and chapter access above.

Save, check the video and choose the next step

  1. Save your description or automatic chapter setting in YouTube Studio.
  2. Open the video’s watch page and check the chapter labels on the progress bar.
  3. If chapters are missing, recheck the saved list or setting, then feature access and the official chapter help.

YouTube’s chapter guide does not promise that waiting exactly 24 hours or reaching a particular subscriber count will make chapters appear.
